LEARN MORE

Oxford cloth finds its beginnings in 19th century Scotland at the epicenter of textile production in Europe. Composed of two different strands of yarn which are woven into a basket weave pattern, this technique gives the Oxford shirt a noticeable weight compared to other button-ups in its category. Pre 1930s, polo players of the British Raj played in shirts made out of Oxford cloth as the fabric was the most breathable at the time. The players began to sew buttons onto the ends of the collar points, holding them in place during matches and giving the Oxford its signature look. The cloth's enduring legacy was cemented during the 1950s, as the Ivy League schools of America adopted the smart, tidy look and restyling it with shorts, loafers and shetland knits eventually leading to deconstructive impulses such as wearing it untucked or with the sleeves rolled to the elbows.
